Reading Between the Lines In today's world reading between the lines is a valuable skill to possess! Everyone packages themselves to display their best traits in the most favorable light; this is human nature. It is also human nature to package their business and products and present them to you in the best possible light; this is marketing. As a business owner I am sure you understand this; now even with this insight; how are you as a consumer? When you begin to use vendors in your business, for whatever you need them for, do you remember to look at their packaging and take it with a grain of salt? I do not intend to imply nor do I believe that most people are guilty of misrepresentation; some certainly are, but they are a minority. Mostly what people are guilty of is possessing good - solid marketing skills. If you take the time to examine competing offers of identical products or services, you are likely to find that the final price paid is very simi liar between the two. One vendor may offer its service at a higher apparent cost up front, while the other offers the same service for considerably less. But when you start to read between the lines, you may find some conditions apply to the lower priced offer! By looking for the "*" and the fine print associated with it, you will likely find that you need to purchase additional services in order to receive the discounted price. The higher priced service most likely included the additional services up front with the higher price. When all is said and done, the two offers are remarkably similar . . . but which one did you as the consumer pay the most attention to? Another situation I have come across is the products that are rebuilt. Often when comparing prices I will find in fine print that the product offering a much lower price is a factory refurbished product. That is a product that was returned because it was defective. They then fixed what was wrong and are now selling it at a discounted price. There is nothing wrong with this, as long as you know about it up front and are willing to take the risk. Failing to read between the lines can be dangerous, it is easy to go for the low price; remember there are other considerations. Setting pricing aside, what kind of customer support can you expect to receive? How easy can you reach a real person to talk to? Local providers have a tendency to be more reliable, after all their reputation is at stake, you know where to find them, and often when they deal with you it is in person, where they are looking you straight in the eye! When all is said and done we want to receive the best possible product and service for our money. By reading between the lines we often find that the price has less to do with our final decision to buy, but more with what kind of quality and service we will receive. One last point I should make here is, now that you have read this article and have put some thought into what is discussed; you just might have some insight into how to better market your services and products. Take a look at your own marketing from the viewpoint of the consumer, tell them why you offer them the best value at the best possible price.
