A basic service Haas Consulting provides for all of our hosting clients is access to their website statistics . . . 24 hours a day, 7days per week. Each client has the ability to log into their stat counter and view a plethora of information. It amazes me as to the number of people that do not take advantage of this opportunity. As business people, I think everyone understands the importance of tracking customer data. I also have a theory as to why most business owners don't do it, at least on a regular basis. As I see it there are two main reasons:
Let us attack the second of these two reasons first. Just what should you be looking for in your user statistics? That answer will vary depending upon your goals and expectations, but there is a pretty common base. Our stat engine reports on the following categories:
Wow! That is a lot of information! Not everything broken down within the stat engine is going to be of value to you though. Some of the key points that I look at when scrutinizing stats are as follows:
You can learn a great deal about your customer's online shopping habits and extrapolate a fair estimate of other information from this data. Careful examination of this information can give you vital clues as to what information they are looking for and what is important to them. Then all you need to do is get the message out that you are the person to meet these specific needs. Now that you know what to look for all you need to do is set the time aside to do it. Yeah right! What time? I am a business owner too, and I understand that it is difficult to divide a given number of hours in the day between all of the things that need to be done. So, it comes down to this:
While option one is pretty much self explanatory; there are a couple of different ways to accomplish option two. You can train someone within your organization to do it for you; or you can hire a marketing firm. Most marketing firms out there today will contract with you to perform specific services for you. This allows you to contract professional help in an area where expertise is a definite plus; while at the same time keeping an eye on costs. Is the information gathered by stat engines really useful? Of course it is, you can use this information to develop quality marketing strategies. Think about it, if you know what people are looking for and how people are going about looking for it, you can target your marketing and get a much higher return on your marketing investments. The internet isn't a 'magic bullet' any more than TV, radio or print advertising is.Online marketing must be done correctly for it to be effective. As much as we don't like to get down to the nitty gritty work of tracking our marketing, it is the only way to determine if we are spending our money wisely.
