Search Engine Rankings - Long Dead?

Internet marketing, constantly changing and being rather fluid, is a beast difficult to tame . It wasn't all that long ago that being number one meant being the top dog in all search categories and all search terms. That idea has already become antiquated. Today it is much more appropriate to concentrate on being the top dog on carefully selected search terms.

Success is no longer measured in who boasts the top spot, but rather by who generates the most favorable return on investment. (ROI) This is particularly true for small business owners that do not have the massive marketing budgets enjoyed by larger businesses.

The search terms that produce the best results for you are not necessarily going to be the obvious and "popular" keywords. With all of the competition shooting for the same target, it is more important to rank high on search terms that produce targeted visitors. It is the targeted visitor that will produce the most conversions for the least amount of investment.

Training yourself to think in this way can be a bit of a challenge. It is human nature to look for the obvious; it's easier to do. What is needed, and of course more difficult to accomplish, is to think harder . . . a bit more abstract. You need to closely examine your product or service and decide what it is that separates it from the competition.

Armed with the knowledge of what makes you special, you need to spend some time thinking about who would buy your products or services. Identify with them, think like they do. In short, put yourself in the shoes of the customer.Once you are there you will be able to better determine what search terms to target.

Still, you are not going to use every search term you think up. You will need to do some research to find out how popular each search term is and determine if it is too popular or not popular enough. You will want to search using the keyword and examine who pops up, examine the competition and consider this as well.

Don't stop there. Having been enlightened with all this knowledge you need to determine what part or parts of your website should be targeted with these keywords. Select pages that speak to the need of the customer you have identified. These pages will be your landing pages. Optimize these pages for your select search phrases and build them for the select customer. Lead them to the part of your website that will answer their questions.

Often there is more money to be made and more success to be experienced by targeting the less popular words that produce, than to try and compete against big money on the obvious keywords. Dropping your line into the fishing hole with lots of other people, some of which having bigger bait, will produce fewer bites. Step aside, find a fishing hole less populated, select the fish you want and select a lure they will bite on; then reel em in!
