Social Media

Social Media is a rapidly growing part of successful online marketing. Early on many developers were skeptical about the value social media would offer. That skepticism has turned to enthusiasm. Social Media has indeed shown itself to be the next 'big thing'; although it may be best labeled as Social Marketing.

For those of you who do not clearly understand what Social Media is, here is a solid definition for you.

"online technologies and practices used by people to publicly share their opinions and experiences with one another. This information can be disseminated as text, images, audio or video (distributed through blogs), message boards, wikis, RSS feeds, podcasts and social networking sites."

Perceived Value

At the very core of Social Media is the concept of personal interaction. It is the idea that you are talking freely and openly about your own personal experiences. You are part of a community of
like-minded people.

As people take part in this community they share experiences with products and services; they talk about how great of an experience they had. This is where Social Media becomes Social Marketing.

Opinions expressed through Social Media are in effect testimonials and at their very best they become the coveted referral!

Danger Lurks - Be Aware

Now, if this thought has not yet occurred to you, we need to take a moment to acknowledge the dangers of Social Media.

People freely sharing great experiences is a great thing, but what if they are dissatisfied? It is likely that they too will share their bad experiences as well.

One of the cornerstones of good customer service is not how you handle dealing with compliments; rather it is in how you deal with criticism.

It is impossible to please everyone all the time. When a negative situation does arise, it is important to proactively deal with it. Address the issue directly and publicly, admit there may be a legitimate issue with the dissatisfied person and offer to make it right.

There have been plenty of examples, with some of the largest corporations on the web, where they have successfully dealt with issues brought up through social media. They have taken a bad review and turned it into an opportunity that has really paid off.

There are also examples where they have failed miserably in dealing with these issues. It is here where social media becomes a double edged sword. More often than not the failures were a result of ignoring the situation, or adding fuel to the fire by becoming defensive.

The truth of the matter is that people are going to talk, the advantage of social media is that you can see what is being said; it is a public forum.

I would much rather have someone talking about me in public, where I can deal with the issue. The alternative is that they talk about me behind my back, where I am unable to redeem myself.

How to make Social Marketing work for you?

  1. Become a social networker
    • Take part, watch and learn
  2. Ad bookmarking links to your content pages
  3. Add RSS feeds
  4. Add email a friend links
  5. Add a forum to your own website
  6. Create a blog
  7. Above all, do not look like you are marketing
    • You must be perceived as a trusted expert and not as a slime ball trying to get people to spend their money

Social media has truly become a powerful marketing tool, when dealt with correctly it can payoff with huge dividends. Try using this email a friend link to send this article to someone you feel it may benefit!
