Marketing 101 - Part 1

"Build it and they will come." While this may work for Kevin Costner in the 1989 film Field of Dreams; it isn't likely that the same carefree attitude will work for you in marketing your business.

The majority of entrepreneurs open a business in a field related to their passion. They are self proclaimed experts offering products or services that they know something about. One very important thing they don't always know a great deal about is how to bring those customers into the store.

Many business owners are at the mercy of assumptions made from historical evidence and the influence of salespeople. Two quick points here, then we will move on to some solid help for you.

  1. What worked for J.C. Penny in the late 1800's or Joe Blow in the 1990's isn't necessarily going to work for you today.
  2. The Ad Rep's job is to persuade you to buy as much of their product as they possibly can. It doesn't mean you need as much as they are offering, or even need it at all.

This months newsletter is the first in a four part series dealing with the basics of marketing your business. This particular topic is so large, I thought it would best serve your needs to break it down into manageable pieces.

How to Market Your Business

Three things you must do in marketing your business.

  1. Create a message
  2. Deliver that message
  3. Track your results

Creating Your Message

What is the obvious message to get across . . . "Here I am!"
OK, that is good, but why should they find you? Letting people know where you are is providing important information; not creating a message.

Your message needs to tell people that you understand what their needs are and you are the person to help them satisfy those needs.

Deliver the Message

This is the tricky part! Selecting the way in which to deliver your message. There are many options:

  • Internet
  • Direct Mail
  • Print
  • Radio
  • and others

The point here is to get your message out in public view in a way and frequency that is effective.

Tracking the Results

Most importantly to your success is tracking the results of your efforts. You need to know if your message is effective and if you are effectively delivering that message to the people that need to hear it.

This is the part of marketing that will make or break your efforts.

That wraps up our overview of what you will learn in the next three newsletters. My next newsletter will explore in greater detail how to create your message.

In the meantime, if you know someone who may be interested in following the next few articles; let them know by using this email a friend link.
