Marketing 101 - Part 2

Creating Your Message

What is the obvious message to get across . . . "Here I am!"
OK, that is good, but why should they find you? Letting people know where you are is providing important information; not creating a message.

Your message needs to tell people that you understand what their needs are and you are the person to help them satisfy those needs.

The first thing you need to do is to do some thinking, yes I know that it isn't all that much fun . . . but you need to do some brain storming. The good news is that you do not need to do it yourself, ask friends and family for some input. You might even ask your customers!

Discover your message: It is important to write down every little thing that comes to mind. Little thoughts lead to bigger thoughts!

  • List what it is that makes you unique
    • What makes you different from your competitors
      • The level of your customer service?
      • Quality and pricing?
    • What do you offer that no one else offers
      • Special brands?
      • Special services?
      • Experience?
  • List what it is that people need from you
    • Do you perform a service that they just can not do themselves?
    • Can they do it themselves, but don't have the time?
    • Your Expertise / Experience
      • Do they need a running shoe or a walking shoe . . . what's the difference?
      • Do they need your advice or encouragement?
    • Reliability / Good Customer Service?

Once you have gone through the discovery phase you will most likely have a fairly lengthy list. You will need to clean that list up a bit before you do some actual marketing.

  • Take the top 5 - 10 items from your list
  • Rank them from most important to least important
    • This is importance to your customers, not necessarily you.

Congratulations you now know what your marketing messages are. Now you can take messages from this list and implement them into your marketing campaigns. A couple additional words of advice:

  • Don't try to use all your marketing messages at once; can you say, "Information Overload?" Spread them out over time and various media.
  • Don't worry if you don't use them all, maybe you will - maybe you won't.

One last thing, never throw out any of your work. Keep it where you can find it later. This process should be repeated at least annually. You will be surprised at how your list will change each time you work with it. Ultimately your customers and the changing dynamics of everything around us makes this a fluid process at best!

Next month we will have part 3 in our four part series; How to Deliver Your Message.

In the meantime, if you know someone who may be interested in following the next few articles; let them know by using this email a friend link.
