Marketing 101 - Part 3

Delivering Your Message

Print it on a post card . . . drop it in the mail . . . DONE!

WOW! Now there is some loosely spent marketing dollars! This type of marketing is often referred to as "shotgun marketing". The theory here seems to be, "Put enough stuff out there and some one is bound to respond!"

Pretty risky marketing; better than doing nothing at all . . . but pretty risky! A better plan would be to know exactly who you want to hear your message, then deliver it directly to that group of people.

Targeting your audience provides you with great opportunities. You will be talking directly to a group of people focused on what it is that you have to sell. By doing this you will be able to concentrate on those most likely to become new customers; increasing your Return on Investment.

The math is pretty simple; spend large amounts of money talking to large numbers of people and hope for the best or spend the same amount of money (maybe less) talking to fewer people, make more sales and rest comfotably knowing that you delivered your message to the people most likely to act.

There is a lot of hidden work behind effectively delivering your marketing message. You will need to do some homework first.

  1. Identify your target audience
    • Who is it that needs to hear your message?
      • Who needs your products/services
    • Determine Demographics
      • Age
      • Social Standing
      • Education
      • Etc
  2. Determine appropriate media
    • Where and when will you be able to reach your target audience?
      • Internet
      • Radio
      • Newsprint
      • Trade/Specialty Magazine
      • Etc.
  3. Determine appropriate balance
    • Odds are an effective campaign will involve multiple media sources.
      • Which combinations will provide the most effect for you?
  4. Determine effective frequency to deliver message
    • The odds picking a particular time of day to tell someone about yourself and connecting with them at that one moment are pretty slim.
    • People need to hear the message more than once for it to sink into their memory.

The idea here is that by knowing who your customers are, what they need, and making them aware that you can satisfy those needs; you will convert leads into sales at a much higher rate. Spending your marketing dollars more wisely; converting more leads into sales.

If your current marketing strategies involve the use of a shotgun, you may want to consider making some changes. As the world continues to change with the internet, cell phones and the like; you need to adjust to remain competitive.

Still to to come is part four! If you missed any one of the articles in the Marketing 101 series; follow this link to our newsletter archive page, where you can read all of our past newsletters.
