New Years Resolutions

Yes, it is that time of year again where one is expected to make their new years resolutions. Most people cringe and reluctantly make a resolution that they either don't plan on sticking to; or that is so easy to realize . . . it really isn't much of a resolution.

What is a New Years Resolution?

Deciding that you want something to change seldom makes it happen. The act of setting goals has a tendency to ad a level of commitment that often translates into success.

A new years resolution is pretty much an annual goal setting activity. It is a traditional opportunity to identify things that you want to improve on during the upcoming year.

Sounds like a good idea . . . something that you should do within your business!

Setting Goals for Your Business

It is the beginning of the year and it really is a good time to put down on paper what you want to accomplish within your business during the coming year.

  • Increase sales by 5%
  • Decrease office supply expenses by 10%
  • hire an additional sales person
  • Reduce product returns by 10%
  • Etc.

Perhaps your first resolution for the new year needs to be that you will take some time and set your goals for 2008. Do it right now! It will be the most productive time you spend working on your business all year!

The first thing you need to do is to sit down and evaluate your current position. Be honest in your observations and create a list that includes both positives and negatives.

Review the list you have created and take a moment or two and acknowledge your successes. It is very important to recognize where you have been successful.

Now look where you have failed. Are there things on this list that you would like to change? Write them down onto a third list. Also write down your successes that you would like to see continue.

This third list is the basis from which to define your 2008 goals. Your list may be long, it may be short . . . it really doesn't matter; it only needs to be honest!

Review through this list giving careful consideration to each item on the list. Decide which items are essential to the success of your business and which are not. Make a final list of goals for the new year and include only the goals that you consider essential for success.

Plan for Success!

With your list of goals in hand plan for success. Take a separate sheet of paper for each goal in this list and write a goal at the top of each page.

Keep in mind that as you work to achieve your goals you will be more successful by breaking them into small, measurable and realistic chunks.

Look at each goal separately. Think about what needs to happen for that goal to be achieved and take notes on this sheet of paper. Write down the steps you need to take, the order to take them in, who you need to have help you, and any time frames you may need to meet.

Now that you laid out a plan, use it as a guide throughout the coming year. Odds are you won't stick to it like it is etched in stone . . . you probably shouldn't. But by having a guide in place and referring to it a few times during the year, you will find that step by step you will successfully meet your goals!

Happy New Year!
