It is really quite interesting to look back at the evolution of the marketplace. Hundreds of years ago your competition would have simply been a neighbor. There were no mail order catalogs, telephone sales, or websites. Travel between communities was so difficult no-one would have even thought of traveling to a nearby town to shop. Progress in transportation brought outside merchants traveling into your market area. They sold their goods and purchased some of your products to bring back to their local markets. Suddenly you were fighting for the attention of customers that had traditionally been yours. You slowly grew accustomed to the new way of marketing and realized that change wasn't all bad. After all there were opportunities in the new way of marketing for you too. Still this new trade was only possible with products that were nonperishable due to the extended amount of time it took to move products from one market place to another.Over the course of time further progress in transportation changed that. Wagon trains, Steam ships, Railroads, trucking, and planes made it possible to move both the products as well as the customers easily and quickly between market places. Still progress continued in marketing, someone came up with the idea of offering products for sale in a catalog. What a concept! Now the business person could bring their marketing directly into the customers home and ship only the products they wished to purchase. It didn't take long for mailing lists and telephone sales to follow along. Many people thought that's about as far as marketing will go . . . that is until this crazy little thing called the internet came along. Bang! Suddenly the marketplace is the largest it has ever been. You have more competitors reaching out to your customers in ways you have never before imagined. But of course it also means that you have more opportunities to reach out to potential customers as well. For countless generations business people have been dealing and growing with changes in the marketplace.
